Oftentimes, a well meaning citizen will come upon a litter of kittens that seem to be "abandoned." This happens a lot in the Spring and Summer, when the weather heats up, cat babies are being born, and people are out walking and gardening.
First, look around. Are the babies in a well hidden, safe location? It is always best to leave the babies alone. Mom cats are excellent mothers, and are often out hunting, leaving babies to sleep. Mom cat will not return if she suspects intruders to her nest. If the babies are NOT in distress (they are sleeping, NOT crying loudly), it is best to leave them be. Mom will return. You could always go back after a few hours, to check on them again. Babies that are in distress and need rescuing will be crying loudly, will be cold to the touch, and no mom will be around. If this is the case, take babies inside, warm them up SLOWLY, with a warm water bottle, or low setting heating pad. Contact a rescue right away. Never feed a kitten cow's milk.
Congratulations on adding a feline family member. Cats bring so much joy and love, and it is our responsibility as pet owners, to ensure the cat leads a happy, healthy, successful life!
The first step is to establish vet care. This allows you are your new cat to be seen by a vet should things go awry during the life of the cat.
The second step is to schedule a sterilization appointment for your furry friend. The Crowned Cat uses SNYP in Talent. Their website www.spayneuter.org, makes scheduling an appt. easy! The staff at SNYP are passionate about ending the cat overpopulation in the Rogue Valley, and exceed industry standards, to ensure the safety of your pet. SNYP also sterilizes stray, feral, community cats. Remember, if you feed it, fix it!
Animal rescue is incredibly rewarding work, that anyone can accomplish. The Crowned Cat suggests locating an agency local to you, and learning about their volunteer opportunities. In cat rescue, there is always a need for donations, fostering, cleaning, admin work, marketing, and sometimes, just giving cuddles to cats.
